Client Success Stories

These are real client success stories and are used with their permission. Each story describes the client’s issue, how we addressed it and the ultimate outcome.

Lisa Dennis was a successful independent marketing consultant who was challenged by trying to have a personal life while running a successful business. In the face
of her clients’ demands, having lunch with anyone who
wanted to network with her and her participation on a non-profit board, she had little time for herself or her husband.
She never got to the gym, her garden had gone to seed and she was away from home too much. She came to me because she wanted more balance in her life, even though she didn’t actually believe it was possible. She knew she had to do something.

In our work together, Lisa learned to put her own needs first, to be more judicious in her choice of clients, to set better limits with them, to only meet with people that she really wanted to and to say “No” to the rest, and to leave the Board work to others with more time. After a year, she was working fewer hours, she had increased her income and she had time to get herself (and her garden) back in shape. She also had more time to devote to her relationship with her husband. She was much happier, and so was he!

Lisa says:“I’m a big believer in coaching IF you are able to find a good one. I worked with Ted on work/life balance issues – and our coaching relationship continued for 2 years. His approach, guidance, questions and perspective were eye-opening and extremely helpful. He moved me from a workaholic to a happier more balanced person – bridging work and personal life easily and comfortably. He was the best!”

“Tom” was unhappy in his position as a project manager and came to me with the very specific goal of creating a new business for himself. During the course of our work together, he realized that he really didn't want to pursue this business. Together we explored his interests, values and goals, which gave him more clarity on what he really wanted to do and why. Our coaching helped Tom progress in his career and personal development. Our work refocused his goals, and he moved on to actively pursue his next job.

Tom says: “Ted's skillful coaching helped me evaluate my motivations for pursuing certain career goals and helped clarify what was most important to me. He listened well, and gave honest, helpful feedback. Most importantly, he supported me in finding my own answers. I had a very positive experience being coached by Ted. He was always pleasant, honest, compassionate and sincere in our interactions. He listened well, made sure he understood what I was saying, and then posed good questions to me as a way to help me figure things out for myself. He took the time to acknowledge my progress which helped keep me motivated and kept me moving forward.”

When Pete Spanos started working with me, he was struggling with employment issues. As a writer living in a new area, he was finding it tough to find work. When we focused on what he was passionate about in life, he got in touch with how much he loved horses. Pete began taking riding lessons and working at several horse farms. After a couple of years, he finally “up and moved” to Kentucky where he found work at one of the finest Thoroughbred farms in the world. After four months there, he was hired as a writer by The Blood-Horse, the industry's most respected and widely read weekly magazine. Pete was on his way to developing a wealth of knowledge and contacts in Lexington that will forward his ultimate dream--to breed and race his own horses.

Pete says: “I would never have been able to do this without Ted’s help. I think it was the fact that he made me feel the thought of spending my life around horses was no less reasonable than doing anything else. It sounds simple, but at the time, it was a huge leap. He encouraged me to live up to my feelings and intuition, to keep my word with myself.”

When her university adjunct faculty contract expired, Naomi R. had just three months (the summer break) to figure out how she was going to support herself and her daughter. Did she want to take her Web design business full-time? Did she want to seek a full-time Web design job in an organization? Did she want to find another teaching position? Naomi’s first success was landing a part-time Web design job (for the summer) with a great organization that offered flexible hours. When we unearthed her long-time desire to be a working artist, she realized that in order to become a more viable candidate for teaching positions or in-house design work, she needed to generate new artwork. So she set aside one day a week to work in her studio throughout the summer. Then, in late July, unexpectedly and just at the right moment, the university renewed her teaching contract, thus giving her another year to sort out her vision and put it in place. Finally, she was invited to participate in a faculty art show, so that new work became even more critical. She was successful, and in November, she unveiled a new multi-media installation at the opening.

Naomi says: “Working with Ted has given my life the jumpstart it sorely needed. Ted is very generous, supportive, and easy to talk with. He has been extraordinarily helpful with the practical issues of navigating the world of job interviews and negotiations. I have more work to do, but with Ted’s guidance I have no doubt that I will find my path...I am already on my way.”
